Materials Fire Properties Testing Laboratory is part of the organizational structure of the Faculty of Maritime Technology and Transport at the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin. The current Laboratory is the successor of the Ship Technical Protection Department of the Szczecin University of Technology, established in the 1970s, whose scientific and research facilities enabled the academic development of many research and teaching staff. The Laboratory primarily conducted flammability tests of materials for the shipbuilding and railway industries.
Due to the growing demand from businesses for accredited flammability testing of materials used in civil construction, shipbuilding, and rail transport, the Laboratory’s facilities were expanded, and in 1999, on the initiative of Dr. Zygmunt Sychta (now DSc in technical sciences), the Materials Fire Properties Testing Laboratory was established. Dr. Zygmunt Sychta – the first head of the Laboratory – together with his team: Krystyna Olender, Helena Iwaszczyńska and Krzysztof Sychta, implemented a quality management system in accordance with the requirements of PN-EN 45001:1993 and ISO/IEC Guide 25:1990, leading to the Laboratory’s accreditation in 2000 by the Polish Center for Testing and Certification – now the Polish Centre for Accreditation. After Dr. Zygmunt Sychta retired in 2011, the Laboratory was headed by Dr. Krzysztof Sychta. In September 2013, the position of Laboratory Head was taken over by Dr. Renata Dobrzyńska.

The Laboratory currently operates in accordance with the implemented management system compliant with PN-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018-02. Additionally, since 1974, the Materials Fire Properties Testing Laboratory has held an Approval Certificate from the Polish Register of Shipping and has for many years been listed among the recognized laboratories published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
In 2023, the Laboratory was designated as a technical service authorized to conduct type‑approval testing of parts and equipment for M3 category vehicles.
The Materials Fire Properties Testing Laboratory is a member of the Polish Research Laboratories Club POLLAB.
