Material tests are carried out under contractual, strictly defined conditions of thermal decomposition and combustion. Ambiguity of the terminological interpretation in determining the parameters of the fire hazard associated with the use of a given material in technical facilities has caused that other methods to assess the suitability of materials from the point of view of the fire hazard they pose, apply:

  • land-based construction  (Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure of 12 April 2002 on technical conditions to be met by buildings and their location - OJ 2002 No. 75 item 690, as amended),
  • offshore/marine construction (International Code for Application of Fire Test Procedures, 2010 - FTP Code 2010, Res. MSC.307 (88)),
  • the railway (EN 45545-2:2021 Railways aplications - Fire protection on railway vehicles - Part 2: Requirements for fire behaviour of materials and components),

Testing the flammability level of materials in laboratory conditions, their smoke and the emission of toxic products of thermal decomposition and combustion are defined only the behavior of these materials and their properties in contractual, strictly defined conditions of thermal decomposition and combustion, not their behavior and their properties under real fire conditions.
